September is a good month to reset training and a busy month for OTCF athletes racing too (Race list at the bottom). The evenings still give enough light for running and riding, the pool sessions bring structure back after summer, and a club parkrun gives everyone a reason to meet up, work hard, and have a coffee afterwards.

Off That Couch Fitness has a busy September schedule coming up, with running intervals at Quibell tonight, bike and swim sessions in Brigg, regular Sunday and now a new Thursday swim session, a basic puncture repair session, and a club parkrun at Scunthorpe followed by Crem hills and coffee.

Here is the full line-up so you can plan your month.

September training at a glance

The month includes a mix of endurance, technique, confidence-building, and social training. Some sessions are hard, some are steady, and some are there to help with the practical skills that make training less stressful.

Sunday swims begin at Brigg pool

The first swim of the month is on Sunday 6th September at 20:00 at Brigg pool.

You can use the booking link here: book the Sunday 6th September swim.

The Sunday evening swim slot is a useful anchor in the week. It gives the weekend a clear finish and sets up the next few days of training. It also suits anyone who wants time in the water without rushing straight from work.

Swim sessions are not just about getting lengths done. They are a chance to build better habits in the water. That can mean smoother breathing, a calmer catch, better body position, or simply becoming more relaxed in the pool.

If you are newer to swimming, do not worry about keeping up with someone in the next lane. The better target is to improve one small part of your swim each time.

That might be:

  • Breathing out steadily into the water

  • Keeping the head still

  • Reducing splash

  • Holding a relaxed kick

  • Taking enough rest to keep technique tidy

If you are more experienced, the Sunday swims are a good place to build rhythm and push yourself with other swimmers. You can push when needed and the coaches will make sure you still focus on quality.

Thursday 10th September combines bike and swim in Brigg

Thursday 10th September has two sessions in Brigg:

  • 18:15 bike session

  • 20:00 swim session

You can use the booking link here: book the Thursday 10th September session.

This is a good evening for anyone working across more than one discipline. A bike session followed by a swim gives a bit of variety and helps build confidence moving between training types.

The bike session starts at 18:15 in Brigg. Arrive with the basics checked before you set off. That means tyres inflated, brakes working, helmet ready, lights on bike, and clothing suitable for the conditions.

A quick check before leaving home can prevent a lot of faff at the meeting point.

Use this simple bike check:

  • Tyres

Give both tyres a firm squeeze and inflate them if needed.

  • Brakes

Check the front and rear brakes before riding.

  • Chain

Make sure it runs smoothly and is not dry or noisy.

  • Helmet

    Check the fit and straps.

  • Lights

    Batteries charged?.

The 20:00 swim afterwards gives riders the chance to loosen off in the pool. If doing both, pack so the changeover is easy. Put swim kit in a separate bag, bring a towel, and think about post-session food and drink.

Training across bike and swim on one evening does not need to feel complicated. Keep it simple, arrive prepared, and treat both sessions as part of the same evening as we are a multisport club.

Sunday 13th September includes puncture repair before swimming

Sunday 13th September is a useful one. There is a basic puncture repair session at 19:20 in Brigg Pool Cafe, followed by the 20:00 swim.

Bring an inner tube, a wheel, or just come along to watch.

This is the kind of session that can save a ride. Knowing how to deal with a puncture takes away a lot of worry, especially if you are newer to cycling or planning to ride further from home.

You do not need to become a mechanic. You just need enough confidence to handle the basics.

A simple puncture repair session will cover things like:

  • Removing the wheel safely

  • Taking out the inner tube

  • Fitting or replacing an inner tube

  • Re-seating the tyre

  • Inflating it properly

Bring a wheel. Watching helps, but doing the steps yourself makes them stick.

The swim at 20:00 follows straight after, so the evening has a nice mix of practical bike knowledge and pool time drills.

Thursday and Sunday swims keep the month consistent

After the first half of the month, the regular Brigg swim sessions continue:

  • Thursday 17th September at 20:00

  • Sunday 20th September at 20:00

  • Thursday 24th September at 20:00

  • Sunday 27th September at 20:00

This regular pattern is one of the best things about the September schedule. You do not need to overthink it. Thursday and Sunday at 20:00 become familiar slots, and that makes training easier to keep.

For swimmers, consistency matters more than one heroic session. Turning up regularly gives your body and brain repeated chances to improve in the water.

Saturday 19th September is club parkrun at Scunthorpe

The social highlight of the month is the club parkrun at Scunthorpe on Saturday 19th September, followed by Crem hills and then coffee.

This is a great mix. Parkrun gives everyone a shared start. Crem hills add a tougher extra challenge for those joining afterwards. Coffee gives the morning a proper finish.

Parkrun is also easy to approach in different ways. Some people will run hard. Some will keep it steady. Some may use it as a return-to-running marker. That flexibility is part of why it works so well as a club meet-up.

The coffee afterwards matters too. It gives people time to chat, ask questions, and feel part of the club. Training is easier when it has a social side. Those small conversations often keep people coming back.

Put the dates in your diary now. Choose the sessions that suit you. Pack your kit the night before. Then turn up ready to run, ride, swim, learn, and be part of OTCF community.
